Synastry
What is Synastry?
In astrology, synastry is the technical study of how two individuals interact with one another. It involves comparing the birth charts of two people to determine where their energies align, where they clash, and how they naturally influence each other's behavior.
Think of a birth chart as a static map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Synastry takes two of these maps and overlays them to see where the "planets" of one person land in relation to the "planets" of the other.
Romantic vs. Friendship Synastry
While the mathematical process of comparing charts is the same, the interpretation changes based on the nature of the relationship.
Romantic Synastry
Romantic synastry focuses on physical attraction, emotional intimacy, and long-term partnership potential. Astrologers look for "procreative" or "bonding" signatures.
- Key Focus: Emotional safety, sexual chemistry, and shared domestic values.
- Example: If Person A's Venus (the planet of affection) is in the same mathematical degree as Person B's Mars (the planet of drive/desire), there is often a high level of immediate physical attraction.
Friendship Synastry
Friendship synastry prioritizes intellectual stimulation, shared interests, and social compatibility. It focuses less on intensity and more on ease of communication and "brotherly" love.
- Key Focus: Communication styles, shared hobbies, and mutual respect.
- Example: If Person A's Mercury (the planet of communication) aligns well with Person B's Jupiter (the planet of expansion), they will likely find each other's ideas inspiring and enjoy long, educational conversations.
Why Complete Natal Data is Essential
To perform an accurate synastry analysis, you must provide three specific pieces of data for both individuals: Date of Birth, Exact Time of Birth, and City of Birth. Without all three, the analysis becomes generalized and often incorrect. Here is why:
| Required Data | Purpose in Synastry |
|---|---|
| Date of Birth | Determines the positions of the slow-moving planets (like Saturn or Jupiter). This provides the "generational" connection but lacks personal detail. |
| City of Birth | Necessary to calculate the precise longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates. The sky looks different from London than it does from Tokyo at the exact same moment. |
| Exact Time | This is the most critical. The Earth rotates 360 degrees every 24 hours. A difference of even four minutes can shift the Rising Sign and House placements, which dictate exactly which area of life a person influences. |
The Impact of the House System
In astrology, the chart is divided into 12 sections called Houses, representing different life areas (e.g., career, home, health).
- With the birth time: We can see that Person A's Sun falls in Person B's 7th House (Marriage/Partnership), indicating a strong romantic bond.
- Without the birth time: We might only see that Person A's Sun is in Aries. There is no way of knowing which "House" it lands in for Person B. It could land in their 10th House (Career), making the relationship feel like a business transaction rather than a romance.
Summary
Imagine comparing two people born on the same day but 12 hours apart. Their planets will be in roughly the same signs, but their House placements -- the framework that makes a relationship feel "personal" -- will be completely different. One pair might be perfect business partners, while the other might be better suited as distant acquaintances. Only complete natal data reveals these distinctions.
