When planets move backward

Retrograde

What is Planetary Retrograde?

In astronomy and astrology, a retrograde occurs when a planet appears to move backward across the sky as viewed from Earth. While the term may sound like a literal reversal of a planet's orbit, it is an optical illusion caused by the differing orbital speeds of Earth and the other planets.

The Mechanism of Retrograde

Every planet in our solar system orbits the Sun in the same direction. However, because Earth's orbit is shorter and faster than the outer planets (and longer than the inner planets), we occasionally "overtake" them.

Psychological and Behavioral Effects

In astrology, planets represent specific functions of the human experience (communication, action, growth, etc.). When a planet is in retrograde, the energy associated with that planet is said to shift from an external expression to an internal focus.

Planet Area of Influence Potential Retrograde Effects
Mercury Communication, travel, technology Delays in logistics; need for editing and revising plans.
Venus Relationships, finances, values Re-evaluating personal connections; assessing spending habits.
Mars Energy, assertion, drive Lower physical vitality; internalized frustration or redirected ambition.
Jupiter Expansion, belief systems, luck Internal growth; questioning personal philosophies or long-term goals.
Saturn Structure, discipline, responsibility Reviewing personal boundaries and professional commitments.

Key Principles for Retrograde Periods

Astrological practitioners generally follow three professional guidelines during these phases:

Summary

A retrograde does not signify a cessation of a planet's influence; rather, it indicates a change in orientation. Instead of pushing forward into new territory, the individual is encouraged to look back at existing circumstances to ensure they are stable and accurate. When the planet eventually moves "direct" (forward) again, the insights gained during the retrograde phase are meant to be applied to future actions.
